Purpose of the catalogue
The VREUR Public Domain Literature Library provides editorial notes for a selection of fiction works available at Project Gutenberg. These notes are designed to support attentive first reading by highlighting structural choices, recurring imagery, shifts in narrative voice, and other authorial techniques that might reward a reader's attention.
Scope and selection
The catalogue includes 94 books, all in the public domain, drawn from Project Gutenberg. The selection favours works that are less frequently studied but offer interesting formal or thematic features. No claim is made that the collection is representative of any period or genre.
Source attribution
Every book is attributed to its original author, translator (where applicable), and publisher (Project Gutenberg). The catalogue does not verify copyright status beyond the public-domain designation supplied by Project Gutenberg; readers should confirm the status for their jurisdiction.
Bibliographic records
Each entry includes the full title, author(s) with birth and death years, publisher, keywords, a target-reader field, and a catalogue note. The keywords and target-reader fields are reproduced from Project Gutenberg metadata. The catalogue note is original editorial content.
Category assignment
Books are grouped into four categories based on shared thematic or formal characteristics. These categories are intended as navigation aids rather than definitive literary judgments. Some works could plausibly fit in more than one category; the assignment reflects a considered editorial decision.
Editorial reading context
The catalogue notes are based on excerpts from each work, not full readings. They identify patterns in the text—such as recurring motifs, changes in pacing, or contrasts between characters' voices—that a reader may find useful. The notes do not provide plot summaries or critical interpretations.
